I was planning to run the Passavant 10k, but Bob Thompson asked if I would do the Biathalon Relay 5k portion for a very fast biker who was wanting to break the course record. I love that kind of challenge and couldn't say no! I won 2 min over 2nd place running a 16:12 5k and we broke the record by 9 minutes!

The following Saturday I ran an emotional 5k. The Brian McMillan Memorial 5k was special to me, as Brian was a friend who ran the St. Jude Springfield to Peoria Run with me the past couple of years. His wife Angela, worked in the ER when I started at the age of 16 and is like a big sister to me. (If you don't know, Brian was an Illinois State Trooper who was killed in the line of duty last fall.) The Sangamon County Sheriff's deputies paid my entry and gave me a police memorial shirt to run in. I told them I could pay my own entry fee and they said: "No way....we are betting money on you!" Gee, no pressure! haha I won and I am consistent if nothing else! I ran it in 16:12 again. Taking the next week off to rest per my EIU coach's advice--but I am doing active recovery with the bike, eliptical, ect... Scholastic is next on 6/21!

Hard to believe my high school running days are over! I am proud to have achieved all-state status in both XC and track this year. Coach Williams said I am the first person in our school's history to achieve this! I felt very relaxed at state--not very nervous at all. The gun went off and Blake DeLong went out in a dead sprint! He had 50 meters easy on the rest of us for the first 2 or 3 laps. I was patient and kept from getting boxed in and went with the eventual winner Brian Peterson in the 2nd, 3rd position. Our first lap was 1:08, I believe and we came through the mile together at 4:46. In lap 6 and 7, Brian and some of the others started making surges that I couldn't seem to respond to. I stayed on pace, but couldn't seem to go with them. I finished in 9:52.21 in 9th place. (Just a hair off my PR) I was hoping to break into the 9:40's, but it's a done deal now. I shook the hands of my opponents these last 4 years: Peterson, Emerick, Feldhake (my future teammate),Block, DeLong, ect and started to exit the field. I thought only 8 got medals and was preparing to face my coaches for falling short. My sister, Chelsey, comes sprinting into the tent to inform me that I HAD medaled. I didn't believe her at first--but to say I was happy to be wrong is an understatement!! I only wish I hadn't cut it so close!

IHSA Sectional

I wasn't nervous about sectional as I knew all my competition. My only goal was to try and break 10 min. for a high seed in the fast heat next Saturday. My stomach had other goals and kept me in the bathroom most of the day with the big "D" (I won't elaborate!) Thanks Glass, for the words of encouragement and Maalox tip. I ended up running 10 flat and think I will get into the fast heat without difficulty. The best part is our team won the team title for the first time since 1994! That means a clean sweep for the year--we won the Sangamon County, Sangamo Conference and Prairie State Conference titles as well! State's up next!! Time to get to work and see what I can do!

The 3200 went well with List of Illini Central drafting off me for the first 6 laps. I threw down the hammer for the last 2 laps and felt great while running. The wind was a factor, but I felt I was running a better time :-( Can I just say I MISS MY WATCH?!?!?!? Thanks IHSA! The 1600 was run at 9pm and when the lead pack accelerated on the 3rd lap I just couldn't respond. I was dead! Finished 4th and am still mad about it today! I think I need to become a fan of the Power Bar or something--I completely ran out of gas! One day of rest and then Sangamon County meet tomorrow.

This just in.....Pana Open 3200.....Blake DeLong won in 9:56 and Jordan 2nd in 9:59 in only his 2nd outdoor 3200 for the season!

Patterson not slowing down

Williamsville senior Jordan Patterson wasn’t unhappy with his third-place finish in the boys 3,200-meter run in the IPTT Class A Indoor Classic on Friday.

Given the fact it was only his second 3,200 race of the spring, not to mention his busy workload away from school, Patterson couldn’t complain.

“We just decided to go for it and see what happened,” said Patterson, who stayed with eventual winner Brian Peterson of Minonk Fieldcrest the first few laps before eventually finishing third with an indoor personal-best time of 10 minutes 07.03 seconds.

Peterson won it Friday in 9:41.11.

“It worked out OK. I’d raced (Peterson) up at Sterling two weeks ago, and I ran at 10:33 there. So it was a good (time) drop. This’ll give me a good pace going into the outdoor season.”

Patterson, who’s already signed to run at Eastern Illinois University, has set a hectic pace for himself in other endeavors. He’s worked in the emergency room at Memorial Medical Center for two years, and he’s going to earn his emergency medical technician certification later this spring.

And if that’s not enough, he’s also joined the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department.

“It’s a full load, but it’s fun,” Patterson said. “I love doing firefighter stuff, but it’s not easy. You have to haul around 250 pounds of dead weight with a training dummy.”

We only do 2 indoor meets each year. It usually gives me one 1600 and one 3200 under my belt before the outdoor season begins. This year I was scrambling to qualify for the 3200 at IPTT because Charleston removed the 3200 w/o informing the coaches! Ran a slow time up in Sterling IL to qualify for IPTT and finished 3rd in the 3200 tonight in 10:07.03. I ran an aggressive first mile in 4:44 while chasing Brian Peterson and then fell off pace and finished 3rd. I feel good about it as it is only my second 3200 for the spring. Now off to Outdoor season!!

Elmwood's Emerick took us out really fast for the first half. I tucked in behind Peterson and Thompson. We were together till about the 1.5 and they pulled ahead about 10 seconds and Emerick came back to me. I went with him up the last hill on the backside and surged when I hit flat land. He had no answer and I finished 3rd behind the two guys I believe will battle it out for the win next weekend. I felt I ran patient and smarter today than I have in the past. I dropped 22 seconds off last year's time on this course and beat the guy who finished 4th at last year's state meet.
I have a week of hard work ahead and hopefully will have a top 10 medal around my neck this time next Saturday!

Won the PORTA Regional in 15:31 with the second place runner in around 16:25. Gearing up for a week of hard work to prepare for the Elmwood sectional. Quite possibly half of the top 10 state finalists will come out of our sectional.

It quickly became a 3 man race today. I took the lead at the half mile and by the 1 mile it was myself, Peterson and Emerick through in 4:58. They surged ahead of me in the second half of mile 2 and I should've stuck, but I didn't think they would maintain. I came through the 2 mile at 10:04 and never could close the gap during mile 3. I finished 3rd in 15:22. Peterson outkicked Emerick in the last 50 to win in 14:58 to Emerick's 15:03. I have 3 more weeks of work to do to get stronger for the State Meet. I surged on an uphill to take the lead--I'll rethink that prior to State as I then felt too fatigued to go with them when they surged later. State Series starts next Saturday with the PORTA Regional--hopefully I can three-peat :-)

80 Degrees and 20 mph winds but I felt great tonight! Went through mile 1 at 4:50 and hit the 2 mile at 9:55 and knew I was en route to a PR. The crowd really helped me as it seemed the other school's coaches and fans were cheering for me as well. Now I am focused on Saturday's meet where I will face some of the state's best on the State Championship course!

What an AMAZING summer!! In June I traveled to Oregon for the Prefontaine Classic. In July I visited Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. Got to run at Crested Butte at 11,000 feet elevation with the team! I then traveled to Alamosa, Colorado to meet Coach Damon Martin of Adams State College and stayed for the week long High Altitude Cross Country Camp. It was a GREAT experience!

I've been putting in 60-70 miles per week this summer. I ran the Springfield to Peoria St. Jude Run yesterday (8/4/07) and put in 17 miles with a 4:44 mile on a 1 mile segment. I am feeling good and looking forward to the State Fair 2 mile Parade Run this Thursday! (8/9/07) August 19th will be the Abe's Amble where I will run a 10k for just the second time and try to lower my PR. Stay tuned!! XC season is coming fast!
